0.50HP, 0.75HP or 1.00HP? Choosing a Water Pump Size in Plain Terms

Horsepower sounds technical, but choosing between 0.50HP, 0.75HP and 1.00HP mostly comes down to your building and how your household uses water.

0.50HP, 0.75HP or 1.00HP? Choosing a Water Pump Size in Plain Terms

How floors, bathrooms and daily habits point towards the right horsepower

When you look at a booster pump catalogue, the first number that stands out is horsepower. Our water pumps come in three ratings: 0.50HP, 0.75HP and 1.00HP. For many owners this is where the uncertainty begins. Is bigger always better? Will a smaller pump be enough? Is it worth stepping up?

This guide avoids technical charts and instead looks at the things you already know about your home or premises. Those details, together with a few photos, are what a sensible HP suggestion is built on.

What horsepower means for you

In everyday terms, horsepower is the amount of work a pump motor is rated to do. A higher rating can generally push water further and serve more outlets at the same time. That does not mean the largest option is automatically right. A pump that is well matched to the building tends to run more comfortably than one that is oversized or undersized for the job.

So rather than asking "which is strongest", it is more helpful to ask "what does my building need?"

The questions that shape the choice

How many floors does the water need to reach?

Height is one of the biggest factors. A single-storey house asks less of a pump than a double-storey or triple-storey building, where water has to climb to the top bathroom and still come out with a comfortable flow.

How many bathrooms are used at the same time?

Think about the busiest time of day. If two or three people shower at once in the morning while the washing machine runs, the pump has to keep pressure up across several outlets. A household that rarely uses more than one bathroom at a time has gentler needs.

What else draws water?

Washing machines, water heaters, a garden hose, or a small kitchen in a shop all add to demand. Note anything that regularly runs alongside the showers.

Is there an existing pump?

If you are replacing a pump, a clear photo of its nameplate tells us what the building has been running on, and whether that has felt enough.

A rough way to think about the three sizes

These are general starting points, not fixed rules. The final suggestion always depends on your photos and the details you share.

  • 0.50HP is often considered for single-storey homes or smaller households where only one or two outlets run at once.
  • 0.75HP is a common middle choice for double-storey terraces and families who tend to use two bathrooms around the same time.
  • 1.00HP is usually discussed for taller buildings, homes with several bathrooms in use together, or shoplots with living space and a kitchen.

If your situation sits between two sizes, tell us. We would rather talk it through than have you guess.

How the prices line up across sizes

Both brands are offered in all three ratings, priced per unit for supply and installation.

SizeTsunami (supply and installation)Grundfos (supply and installation)
0.50HPRM1,800 per unitRM3,600 per unit
0.75HPRM2,000 per unitRM3,800 per unit
1.00HPRM2,200 per unitRM4,000 per unit

Each price covers the pump, installation, basic wiring, and pressure and function testing. Pipe modification, extra wiring and old-pump removal are quoted separately. You can see the units in our pump catalogue, and if you are weighing the two brands, the Tsunami and Grundfos comparison sets them side by side.

Mistakes worth avoiding

  • Choosing purely by price. The smallest pump may not keep up with a busy household, and you may end up changing it.
  • Choosing purely by size. More horsepower than needed is not automatically an improvement for a small home.
  • Ignoring the pipes. Narrow or tired pipework can limit what any pump delivers. Photos help us spot this early.
  • Forgetting power supply. A pump needs a suitable power point nearby. If new wiring is needed, it is quoted separately.

What to send for a size suggestion

Tell us how many floors you have, how many bathrooms are used together at busy times, and what else draws water. Add photos of the planned pump area, your tank if you have one, and any existing pump, plus your location. Owners in Shah Alam, Subang Jaya, Johor Bahru and every other state can enquire the same way; scheduling and extra charges are confirmed on WhatsApp.
